Selena Quintanilla’s Teen Years: Career and Style in the 1980s

Selena Quintanilla, born in 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas, began her musical journey as a child performing with her family’s band, Selena y Los Dinos. Managed by her father Abraham, and alongside her siblings A.B. and Suzette, the band performed Tejano music, a genre combining Mexican, country, and pop influences. Selena started singing at the family restaurant, Papa Gayo’s, around 1980, and despite the economic challenges of the 1980s oil glut recession that forced the family to relocate to Corpus Christi, she continued to perform across Texas at weddings, fairs, and small venues. By 1984, at age 13, she recorded her first LP for Freddie Records. Initially learning Spanish phonetically, Selena became fluent and began to break into the male-dominated Tejano scene. Her recognition grew after winning the Female Vocalist of the Year award at the Tejano Music Awards in 1987, leading to nine consecutive wins. In 1989, she signed with EMI Latin and released her debut album, with her brother A.B. as producer. Her teen years were marked by bold 1980s fashion, featuring big hair, bright makeup, sequined outfits, and Western-inspired accessories, while her off-stage style included jeans, sneakers, and colorful tops. Selena’s energetic stage presence and coordinated outfits with Los Dinos reflected both the era’s trends and her emerging star power.
