Toronto Subway Musicians Enliven Daily Commutes with Live Performances

Toronto’s subway stations are home to a vibrant community of musicians who perform regularly for commuters. Among them is cellist Leo Zhang, who has played underground for nearly 30 years, offering performances at multiple stations each week. Zhang credits the TTC busking scene with helping him overcome stage fright and launching his professional music career. Other musicians, like singer-guitarist Charmie Deller and multi-instrumentalist Benji Crane, also bring joy to daily travellers, often inspiring spontaneous participation and memorable interactions. The Toronto Transit Commission licences 89 musicians across 29 stations through a three-year audition process, ensuring that live music is a constant feature of commuting life. These artists not only perform for income but also to enhance the atmosphere, evoke memories, and provide moments of connection amid the city’s hustle and bustle. Many performers have leveraged subway appearances into broader opportunities, such as recordings and collaborations with well-known artists, demonstrating the underground stage’s influence beyond the stations themselves.
