Architects Frontman Sam Carter Addresses Mental Health Struggles Linked to Online Vocal Criticism

Sam Carter, lead vocalist of the band Architects, has publicly discussed the significant impact of online criticism on his mental health and vocal performance. In an Instagram post dated October 17, 2026, Carter revealed that negative comments about his voice during live performances have led to severe anxiety and emotional distress. He described how the constant scrutiny has taken away the joy of performing, stating, “The more I tried, the crueler the comments over the summer got and it led me to a place where I was physically and emotionally shot.” Carter explained that after a challenging performance at Rock am Ring in the summer of 2026, where he attempted a new vocal technique in front of 90,000 people, the online backlash intensified. This led to a period where he struggled with performance anxiety, making it difficult to enjoy his work with the band. He has been working diligently to regain his vocal confidence, seeking help from vocal coach David from Extreme Vocal Academy. Carter also disclosed that he has been attending weekly therapy sessions and taking medication for his anxiety. “I want to take this time to say that everything that I’ve been doing and the stress that I’m putting on myself is ultimately making it and my mental health worse,” he wrote. He emphasized that he is a human being doing his best, acknowledging that perfection isn’t achievable. Carter expressed gratitude for the support from his bandmates and wife, but stressed the need to share his struggles with fans. He concluded his post by stating, “I’m going to scream the words from a place of passion and determination,” and urged fans to be kind, as “you never know what someone is truly going through.” The band is currently touring Europe with Korn and has upcoming performances at Rock For People 2027 alongside Blink-182 and Faith No More. Carter’s openness about his mental health challenges highlights the pressures faced by musicians in the public eye and underscores the importance of mental health support within the music industry.
