Asha Bhosle, the legendary playback singer whose voice defined versatility in Indian music, passed away on Sunday at the age of 92. Fondly called Asha tai, she was admitted to a Mumbai hospital on Saturday due to exhaustion and a chest infection. Recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, her illustrious career spanned nearly eight decades, during which she recorded over 11,000 songs, collaborating with eminent composers like OP Nayyar and RD Burman. Known for her rollicking duets with Kishore Kumar, bhajans, ghazals, qawwalis, discos, and Indi-pop, she transcended genres and captivated multiple generations. Her voice symbolised defiance and individuality, in contrast to her sister Lata Mangeshkar’s classical and decorous style, giving a voice to unconventional characters in cinema such as cabaret dancers and gangster girls. Remarkably, she adapted to changing musical trends throughout her life, even collaborating with the virtual British band Gorillaz in 2026. Asha Bhosle leaves behind a legacy that is deeply embedded in the emotional landscape of India, and her contributions to music ensure that her presence will continue to resonate for generations.
