Yale University Introduces Course on Bad Bunny’s Cultural and Political Impact

Yale University is set to offer a new course this fall titled ‘Bad Bunny: Musical Aesthetics and Politics,’ focusing on the cultural and political significance of the Puerto Rican reggaeton superstar. Conceived by Professor Albert Laguna from the American Studies and Ethnicity, Race, and Migration departments, the course will explore themes such as the Puerto Rican diaspora, colonialism, and Caribbean politics through the lens of Bad Bunny’s music, particularly his latest album, ‘Debí Tirar Más Fotos.’ The album, recorded in Puerto Rico and hailed as his ‘most Puerto Rican album ever,’ serves as a tribute to his homeland and roots. It incorporates traditional genres like salsa, bomba, and plena, blending them with contemporary Latin trap and reggaeton to highlight the island’s past and present. Laguna was inspired to create the course during a trip to New Orleans, where the city’s Caribbean atmosphere reminded him of San Juan. The course joins a growing list of academic explorations into pop icons such as Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, signaling Bad Bunny’s growing influence beyond music into broader cultural and social discourse.
