Rock icon Billy Idol recently opened up about his struggles with drug addiction, explaining that during his battle with heroin, he briefly turned to crack as a way to stop using heroin. Idol shared these revelations during a podcast appearance on Club Random with Bill Maher, emphasizing that while it was a dangerous choice, it ultimately helped him break free from heroin. In his new documentary, ‘Billy Idol Should Be Dead,’ the singer reflects on his tumultuous career, near-death experiences, and reckless lifestyle, including a severe motorcycle accident in 1990 and a near-fatal heroin overdose in 1984. Idol recounted how drug use was deeply ingrained in the 1980s rock scene, beginning with his first experience with acid at just 12 years old. Over time, fatherhood and self-reflection led him to adopt a more disciplined lifestyle. Today, he describes himself as ‘California sober,’ occasionally using cannabis-based products but avoiding cocaine for more than 20 years. The documentary premiered at the Tribeca Festival in June 2025 and offers a candid look at the challenges and risks Idol faced during his rise to fame, providing insight into the dangers of the rock and roll lifestyle and the path to recovery.
