Bobby Whitlock, Co-Founder of Derek and the Dominos, Dies After Brief Illness

Bobby Whitlock, the renowned keyboardist, singer-songwriter, and co-founder of the blues-rock band Derek and the Dominos, passed away on August 10, 2025, at the age of 77 after a brief battle with cancer. Whitlock died early Sunday morning at his home in Texas, surrounded by family. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948 and began his music career with the Memphis soul scene, becoming the first white artist signed to Stax Records. Whitlock played with iconic soul groups such as Booker T. & the M.G.’s and Sam & Dave. He later joined Delaney & Bonnie, where he met future Derek and the Dominos members Eric Clapton, Carl Radle, and Jim Gordon. As a member of Derek and the Dominos, Whitlock co-wrote much of the acclaimed album ‘Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs’ (1970), which featured classics like ‘Layla’ and ‘Bell Bottom Blues.’ Besides his work with Clapton, he contributed to significant projects including George Harrison’s album ‘All Things Must Pass.’ After his music career, he explored painting and other art forms. Whitlock’s death was mourned by family, friends, and fans worldwide, highlighting his journey from poverty to musical stardom and his lasting impact on rock and soul music.
