15-year-old Oscar wins Young Organist of the Year award after just two years learning organ
Oscar, a 15-year-old from Old Catton near Norwich, has won the Young Organist of the Year award at the Music Museum in Brentford, remarkably after only two years of playing the organ. He started learning the instrument in Easter 2023 and has developed his skills largely by ear, drawing inspiration from listening to other organists, orchestras, bands, and singers. Unlike many young musicians who opt for piano, Oscar finds playing the organ uncommon and emphasizes the importance of feeling the music rather than overthinking it while performing. His father, Steven, expressed pride in Oscar’s rapid progress, noting that he has achieved in two years what might normally take decades, demonstrating an exceptional musical ear and ability to harmonize and personalize tunes. Oscar plans to pursue a career in engineering but intends to keep playing the organ and piano as lifelong passions, stating he cannot imagine life without them.
