Cape Town International Jazz Festival evolves with diverse 2026 line-up and renewed vision
The Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) returns for its 23rd edition on 27 and 28 March 2026 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, marking a significant moment of renewal for one of Africa’s leading music events. Known as “Africa’s Grandest Gathering”, the festival continues to balance its rich legacy with a forward-looking approach that embraces new sounds and audiences.
This year’s edition introduces a refreshed visual identity and expanded programming, reflecting a broader ambition to remain culturally relevant in a rapidly evolving musical landscape. While staying rooted in jazz, the festival continues to explore the genre as a fluid and experimental form, incorporating influences from across the African continent and beyond.
The 2026 line-up highlights this evolution. Established jazz figures such as Nduduzo Makhathini, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse and Yellowjackets share the stage with contemporary artists like Manana and lordkez, who represent the growing influence of R&B. The inclusion of amapiano stars DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small signals a deliberate shift towards embracing South Africa’s most globally recognised modern genre.
A major highlight is the South African debut of British artist Jacob Collier, whose genre-blending style is expected to draw significant attention. Alongside headline acts, the festival continues to nurture emerging talent and promote musical dialogue through initiatives such as the Conversation Series and free masterclasses.
Beyond performances, organisers have introduced practical improvements, including a shuttle service from Franschhoek to ease transport challenges. Community engagement remains central, with a free concert in Greenmarket Square featuring Sheila E. and other local artists.
