Legendary South African opera singer Mimi Coertse passes away at 93

South Africa’s iconic opera singer Mimi Coertse has passed away at the age of 93 in Pretoria, peacefully in her sleep. Coertse, who was born in Durban, earned international acclaim for her remarkable soprano voice. After studying in South Africa and Austria, she graced the stages of Europe’s most prestigious opera houses, including the Vienna State Opera, where she performed for 18 years. She made a significant impact in the global opera scene from the 1950s onwards, before returning to South Africa, where she dedicated herself to mentoring young singers and offering bursaries for them to study in Europe. Coertse was also deeply devoted to her family, with her children Mia and Werner and her grandchildren being a central part of her life. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Tributes from all over the world have poured in, recognising her immense contribution to opera and the arts.
