Chappell Roan parts ways with Wasserman-led agency citing moral accountability

Singer Chappell Roan has announced that she is no longer represented by the talent agency led by Casey Wasserman, a move that follows renewed scrutiny of Wasserman after his name appeared in files connected to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Roan shared her decision in a statement posted on Instagram, explaining that she felt a responsibility to protect her team and that meaningful change within the entertainment industry requires accountability. While she did not directly reference Epstein or the recently released files, Roan made clear that she believed no artist or employee should be expected to ignore actions that clash with their moral values.

The controversy surrounding Wasserman stems from flirtatious emails he exchanged with Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in recruiting and trafficking teenage girls for Epstein. These emails were revealed as part of millions of documents made public in relation to the Epstein case. Wasserman has stated that he deeply regrets the correspondence, emphasizing that it occurred more than 20 years ago, before Maxwell’s crimes were publicly known. He has also stressed that he never had a personal or business relationship with Epstein and noted that his only association was a 2002 humanitarian trip connected to the Clinton Foundation, during which he traveled on Epstein’s plane.

Despite these explanations, Wasserman has faced significant criticism and calls to step down from his role as chairman of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Importantly, he has not been accused of wrongdoing by Epstein’s victims, and the presence of his name in the files does not imply criminal activity.

Roan’s decision follows similar moves by other artists. The indie rock band Wednesday stated they were shocked by Wasserman’s inclusion in the Epstein files and wished to distance themselves from his agency, while rock band Beach Bunny expressed disappointment and disgust over his involvement with Maxwell. Together, these departures reflect broader concerns among artists about ethical standards and accountability within the music and entertainment industry.
