Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo Collaborate on ‘Expectations’ Remix, Infusing Queer Perspective

Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo have collaborated on a remix of Rodrigo’s hit song ‘Expectations,’ bringing a fresh perspective to the track. During an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Roan revealed that her goal was to ‘make things a little gay,’ adding a queer perspective to the song. This marks Roan’s first-ever feature on a track, which she described as a perfect fit. The collaboration came about during studio sessions where Rodrigo shared dating stories with Roan, leading to the creation of a new verse that reflects Roan’s experiences. Rodrigo explained that she initially wrote ‘Expectations’ as a mantra song, inspired by tracks like Kendrick Lamar’s ‘HUMBLE.’, aiming to create something listeners could repeat. Roan’s contribution, however, shifted the song’s focus to include a more inclusive view of relationships and dating. The remix builds on the creative influences behind Rodrigo’s original song, with Roan’s ‘attitude and swagger’ influencing Rodrigo’s approach. ‘Expectations’ originally debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2026, and is part of Rodrigo’s third studio album, ‘You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,’ which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Roan, known for her music exploring queer experiences and rocky relationships, has also had chart success with hits like ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ and ‘The Subway,’ both reaching the top 10 of the Hot 100. The collaboration highlights the mutual respect and creative synergy between the two artists, showcasing how their perspectives on love, dating, and expectations have come together to create a new version of the song that resonates with a broader audience.
