Chris Rea: A Lifetime on the Road, Where Cars and Music Intersect

Chris Rea, the iconic rock and blues singer, gained recognition not only for his distinctive gravelly voice and slide guitar playing but also for his deep love of cars and driving. His music, including hits like ‘Driving Home for Christmas,’ ‘The Road to Hell,’ and ‘Auberge,’ often reflected his passion for the road. Born in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire in 1951, Rea came from a family known for running a local ice cream business. Though initially expected to help expand the family business, Rea’s heart was in music, leading him to buy his first guitar and play with local bands. After his breakout with The Beautiful Losers, he went on to release 25 solo albums. Rea’s iconic Christmas song, ‘Driving Home for Christmas,’ came about from a personal moment of frustration, stuck in snow and traffic on a journey from London to Middlesbrough. His love for cars didn’t just inspire his music but also his lifestyle. He was a car enthusiast, owning various vintage vehicles and even racing them. Despite health challenges, including a stroke and pancreatic cancer, Rea continued to create music, with his 24th album, ‘Road Songs for Lovers,’ released after his stroke in 2016. His music was always a reflection of his journeys—both literal and metaphorical—along the roads of life.
