20th Anniversary Festival Celebrates Sir Malcolm Arnold with 20 Concertos

The Malcolm Arnold Festival in Northampton is marking its 20th year by performing 20 concertos composed by the late Sir Malcolm Arnold. Sir Malcolm, who died in 2006 at the age of 84, was a celebrated British composer known for winning an Academy Award for his 1957 film score The Bridge on the River Kwai. The festival, held from October 18-19 at Northampton School for Boys, began in 2006 as a celebration of his 85th birthday but became a tribute following his passing two weeks before. Festival director Paul Harris highlighted how the event has helped bring Arnold’s music back into the spotlight, emphasizing his unique style that combined accessibility with originality during a time when critics favored less melodic compositions. The festival program includes a performance of the Grand Concerto Gastronomique, featuring a wordless soprano part as a tribute to the Australian singer Nellie Melba. Mr. Harris expressed his commitment to continuing the festival as long as there is interest. This event not only honors a key figure in British classical music but also fosters ongoing appreciation and recognition of his work.
