Valery Gergiev’s Concert in Italy Cancelled Due to Criticism over Ties with Putin

A concert by Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, who has been a strong ally of President Putin, has been cancelled in Italy after receiving widespread criticism. Gergiev, who was scheduled to lead an orchestra at the Un’Estate da RE festival in Naples, has been barred from Western performances since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. His refusal to condemn Putin’s actions has led to his exclusion from several major institutions across Europe and the United States. The Italian Culture Minister, Alessandro Giuli, expressed that the cancellation was a move to protect the ‘values of the free world’. The Royal Palace of Caserta, where the concert was set to take place, did not provide an official reason for the cancellation. Ukraine had urged the organizers to cancel Gergiev’s performance, labeling him a ‘mouthpiece’ for Putin. The decision was welcomed by Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who called it ‘good news.’ However, Moscow’s ambassador to Italy denounced the cancellation, claiming it was part of a larger effort to ‘cancel’ Russian culture. This controversy comes amidst Italy’s broader diplomatic stance in support of Ukraine, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni consistently opposing Putin’s actions.
