James Prime, Deacon Blue Founding Member and Music Lecturer, Dies of Cancer at 64

James Prime, the keyboardist and founding member of the iconic Scottish band Deacon Blue, has passed away at the age of 64 following a brief battle with cancer. Born in Kilmarnock, Prime played a significant role in shaping the band’s sound since its formation in Glasgow in 1985 by lead singer Ricky Ross. Known for hits like ‘Dignity’ and ‘Real Gone Kid,’ Deacon Blue became one of Scotland’s most successful music acts, boasting 12 UK Top 40 singles and two number-one albums.

The band announced his death in a heartfelt Instagram statement, expressing gratitude for the supportive messages received during his illness. Just a week prior, they had revealed that Prime was seriously ill and in intensive care, but he had encouraged them to proceed with their scheduled tour. Aside from his musical career, Prime was also a music lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland, furthering his impact on the Scottish music scene.

Fellow bandmate Ricky Ross shared his grief on X (formerly Twitter), saying, ‘We are broken-hearted,’ and appreciated the outpouring of love from fans. Prime’s legacy continues both in music and education, leaving a lasting impression on his colleagues and admirers alike.
