Dennis Busulwa Ssebo and his role in making Singeli music national

Dennis Busulwa, commonly called Ssebo in Tanzania’s media circles, passed away on March 11, 2026. Known as a quiet yet powerful force behind the scenes, he served as Director of Operations and Business at EFM Radio and TVE. Ssebo is celebrated for transforming Singeli music from a local street phenomenon in Tandale and Manzese into a recognized national genre. With his background as a lawyer and experience in East Africa Radio and TV, he brought exceptional energy and organisational skills, helping Singeli gain a stage beyond neighbourhood parties. He coordinated nationwide tours like the 2017 six-region roadshow and helped professionalize the genre through competitions and radio-friendly edits. Under Ssebo’s guidance, artists learned about branding and media appearances, turning street performers into national stars. His work demonstrated that with proper structure and vision, even chaotic street music could become a cornerstone of Tanzanian culture. Colleagues describe him as a rare media executive who could do almost everything, quietly ensuring that Singeli’s vibrant energy reached the ears of the whole country. Ssebo’s passing leaves a gap not only professionally but also personally, as he was a trusted friend and collaborator to many, including EFM founder Majay.
