Dwson makes his first appearance at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival

Cape Town producer and DJ Dwson, whose real name is Ashwin Julies, is set to perform for the first time at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. Known for blending deep house with elements of R&B, hip-hop and jazz, Dwson brings a sound that bridges electronic music and live jazz traditions. This performance represents a full-circle moment for him, as jazz has been a foundational influence on his work. Dwson began making music during his school years and later emerged in the mid-2010s from Cape Town’s club scene. His music is characterised by emotional depth and fluidity, shaped more by instinct and faith than strict formulas. He describes his creative process as letting the music flow naturally, much like a painter guided by inspiration.

Dwson’s live sets are dynamic, adjusting to the crowd’s energy rather than sticking rigidly to preplanned playlists. This flexibility should serve him well at the festival, which draws tens of thousands of music lovers from across the world. The performance follows the release of his new album, ‘Nothing to Lose’, a 16-track vocal-driven project that reached the top of local dance charts within a day of release. Released independently through his label, the album highlights his growth as both artist and producer. Beyond his studio success, Dwson has nurtured Cape Town’s music scene through his Dope Room platform, fostering collaboration and community among local DJs. After performing at Amsterdam Dance Event 2025, Dwson’s growing international presence aligns with his roots at home.
