Ed Sheeran Cancels Gillette Stadium Shows Over Severe Weather After Macklemore Controversy
Ed Sheeran’s two scheduled concerts at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, have been canceled due to severe weather warnings affecting the U.S. East Coast. The promoter, Messina Touring, announced the decision on Instagram, emphasizing that fan and staff safety was the top priority. Refunds are now available at the point of purchase, with Ticketmaster customers receiving automatic refunds.
Meteorologists forecast strong winds, coastal flooding, and heavy rain across the region, with gusts near Boston potentially reaching 55 mph. Gillette Stadium sits about 30 miles south of Boston, placing it squarely in the affected zone.
The cancellations follow a separate controversy involving the stadium’s owner, Robert Kraft, who barred rapper Macklemore from performing after he made comments supporting Palestine. Kraft stated he would not provide a platform for hate speech. In response, several of Sheeran’s support acts, including Finneas, withdrew from the Loop Tour in protest.
Sheeran later apologized to fans, acknowledging mistakes in how the situation was handled. He expressed reluctance to become an activist musician but recognized the complexity of the debate over free speech and the Israel-Gaza conflict. He described the October 7 attacks in Israel as horrific and called the situation in Gaza catastrophic and disproportionate, noting the devastating civilian toll.
Meanwhile, Macklemore has announced a series of European concerts under the Free Palestine Tour, continuing his performances abroad despite the U.S. venue ban.
