Ed Sheeran Addresses Macklemore Controversy Before Philadelphia Concert as Supporting Acts Withdraw

Ed Sheeran returned to the stage in Philadelphia on Saturday night for his first performance since the controversy surrounding the removal of Macklemore from his U.S. tour dates. Before beginning his show at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran addressed the situation directly, expressing regret over the decision to cut Macklemore after the rapper made pro-Palestinian comments during a previous concert. Sheeran explained that he has been deeply affected by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and faced difficult choices that ultimately thrust him into a political debate he had not sought.

Following Macklemore’s exit, several other supporting acts, including Irish singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe and the Danish band Lukas Graham, also withdrew from the tour over the past week. Sheeran condemned the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel as horrific while also describing Israel’s military response in Gaza as catastrophic and disproportionate. He emphasized that his concerts should remain a sanctuary where everyone is welcome regardless of their political views.

The controversy sparked mixed reactions among fans and led to small pro-Palestinian protests near the venue. Some ticket holders reconsidered attending, while others remained committed to seeing Sheeran perform. Ticket resale prices dropped significantly, and the promoter unusually offered refunds to ticketholders who requested them. The situation also drew criticism from free speech advocates who argued Sheeran should have resisted pressure from stadium owners, particularly New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who publicly stated he would not allow Macklemore to perform at Gillette Stadium. Despite the surrounding drama, thousands of fans attended the concert, many expressing hope that the evening would focus on the music rather than the political controversy.
