Eddie Butita Supports Bien’s Song Abroad by Paying Street Vendor in China

Comedian and scriptwriter Eddie Butita recently left Kenyans entertained after sharing a funny moment from his trip to China. While there, he paid a street vendor to play the popular song ‘Finale’ by Bien Aime Baraza featuring Ali Kiba. Butita explained on Instagram that the vendor, positioned in a busy Chinese street, plays any song for a fee. Each song cost him KSh 9,400, meaning playing ten songs would set him back around KSh 94,000. He jokingly remarked that this was the first time he had ‘bought views’ for Bien. Kenyans on social media reacted with laughter, appreciating the vendor’s hustle and teasing Butita for his unique way of promoting the music abroad. In a related discussion, Butita highlighted the huge differences in YouTube monetisation between Kenya and the US. He noted that one million views in the US can earn around KSh 800,000 compared to KSh 150,000 in Kenya, citing higher advertising rates abroad as the reason. This story highlights not only Butita’s support for Kenyan music internationally but also sheds light on the challenges African content creators face in monetising their work compared to Western counterparts.
