Estates of Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell Fail to Claim Rights to 1960s Hendrix Recordings
The estates of Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, former members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, have lost a long-running legal dispute against Sony Music Entertainment UK. The estates sought recognition of copyright and performers’ rights for approximately 40 studio recordings made in the 1960s. Both Redding and Mitchell, who passed away in the 2000s, were key members of the band alongside Hendrix, contributing to landmark albums including Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland. The court ruled that the recording agreements clearly granted copyright ownership to the producers, not the musicians, with no temporal or territorial restrictions. Consequently, the estates were denied any claim to ownership or royalties. Sony expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, highlighting the importance of respecting established agreements despite technological changes in the music industry. Janie Hendrix, Jimi’s sister and CEO of Experience Hendrix, also reflected positively on her interactions with both musicians, underlining a commitment to honouring those who contributed to Hendrix’s legacy.
