Zubeen Garg, Assam’s Musical Icon, Mourned by Thousands After Untimely Death

Zubeen Garg, a beloved singer-composer from Assam, tragically passed away on September 19 in Singapore after drowning. Garg was 52 and had a career spanning over three decades, singing in more than 40 languages and dialects. He gained national fame with his hit Hindi song ‘Ya Ali’ from the 2006 film *Gangster*. Fans from across India have gathered in his hometown, Guwahati, to pay their respects. His cremation will take place with state honours following a second autopsy to ensure no foul play was involved. Garg’s rise to stardom began at the age of 19 with his first album *Anamika*, which became an instant hit. His music, which ranged from rock to Assamese folk, earned him a devoted fan base, and his songs were popular during the Bihu festival. Garg was known for his activism, speaking out against violence and supporting social causes. In his later years, he even opened his home to be used as a Covid isolation centre and was known for his generous contributions to various social causes. His passing has left a significant void, with many recalling his generosity and fearless activism. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, highlighting Garg’s contributions to Indian music.
