Eurovision Expands to Asia with Bangkok Hosting First Regional Contest in 2026
The Eurovision Song Contest, known for its flamboyant performances, political undertones, and international appeal, is expanding to Asia for the first time. The Asian edition will debut on November 14, 2026, with the Grand Final hosted in Bangkok, Thailand. Ten nations are already confirmed, including South Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Laos, with additional participants expected to join in the coming months. According to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organizes Eurovision, the new contest aims to reflect Asia’s cultural diversity, creativity, and regional identity while marking Eurovision’s 70th anniversary.
In its traditional European form, Eurovision brings together dozens of countries, each represented by a performer chosen by their national broadcaster to deliver an original song under three minutes. Winners are decided through a mix of jury and public votes, although voters cannot choose their own country’s entry — a rule that often fuels friendly rivalries and alliances. Over the years, Eurovision has become both a celebration of unity and a reflection of geopolitical tensions. Russia, banned since invading Ukraine in 2022, now hosts a rival version of the contest. Meanwhile, several European countries are boycotting the 2026 main event in Vienna, citing objections to Israel’s inclusion amid the ongoing Gaza conflict. Despite controversies, Eurovision continues to attract over 150 million global viewers and has launched the careers of famous artists like ABBA and Celine Dion. The new Asian edition aims to capture similar excitement, expanding Eurovision’s influence and energy well beyond Europe’s borders.
