Independent Venue Week Celebrates Grassroots Music Spaces in East of England and Across the UK

Independent Venue Week, an annual UK-wide campaign, kicks off on Monday, 26 January, to highlight and support independent music and arts venues that play a vital role in local communities. In the East of England, seventeen organisations are participating with live gigs, special events, and performances by artists such as Will Varley and The Dunwells at Hot Box Live in Chelmsford, Essex, and Hot Wax at The Waterfront in Norwich. Other notable venues include Bedford Esquires, which has a history of hosting major acts like Coldplay and Lizzo since 1990, and The Pioneer Club in St Albans, Hertfordshire, where The Zombies rehearsed in 1961. Venues like The Baths in Ipswich, originally a swimming pool converted for performances in the 1960s and 1970s, have welcomed legends such as Led Zeppelin and Rod Stewart. The John Peel Centre in Stowmarket and Norwich Arts Centre, which once featured Oasis just before their debut album, are also involved. Campaign founder Sybil Bell stressed the importance of preserving these passionate, often struggling spaces, especially in regions with fewer venues. Many have faced financial challenges, such as Hot Box Live, which accumulated £80,000 in debt during the pandemic and relied on fundraising, including an event with DJ Fatboy Slim. The week aims to celebrate the cultural significance and community joy these ‘underdog’ venues provide while encouraging support for grassroots music scenes.
