Harry Styles reflects on the difficulty of grieving Liam Payne under public scrutiny

British pop star Harry Styles has spoken openly about the emotional difficulty he faced after the death of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, explaining that he found it challenging to grieve while under public scrutiny. In an extended interview with Apple Music host Zane Lowe, Styles said he struggled with the expectation that he should publicly express his grief in a particular way following Payne’s passing.

Styles acknowledged that even discussing the topic still feels difficult for him. He explained that part of the struggle came from the sense that fans and the wider public felt connected to his loss and therefore expected him to communicate his emotions openly. According to Styles, this dynamic made it harder to process the tragedy privately. Despite appearing quiet publicly, he emphasised that he was deeply affected by the death of someone he had known for nearly 15 years.

The singer described Payne as a close friend whose personality and outlook on life shared many similarities with his own. Reflecting on their friendship, Styles said Payne had a kind heart and a genuine desire to do well and be a good person. Losing someone so similar to himself made the experience particularly confronting.

The tragedy also prompted a broader period of reflection in Styles’ life. He said Payne’s death pushed him to reconsider how he wants to live and what matters most. For Styles, the lesson he drew from the loss was the importance of valuing life and making the most of it.

He concluded that the best way to honour friends who have passed away is to live life fully. Styles described Payne as a “super special person” and expressed sadness over the loss.

One Direction originally formed in 2010 on the television talent show The X Factor UK. The group included Styles, Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, who left the band in 2015. The remaining members eventually disbanded in 2016 and have since pursued solo careers. Styles has become one of the most successful among them and is preparing to release his fourth studio album while also announcing an upcoming world tour with shows scheduled in Melbourne and Sydney in 2026.
