Black Sabbath Honored with Freedom of the City in Birmingham

The legendary heavy metal band Black Sabbath was awarded the Freedom of the City of Birmingham in a private ceremony held on Saturday. All four original members, including Terence ‘Geezer’ Butler, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, and Bill Ward, were presented with scrolls and medals by the Lord Mayor. This honor acknowledges the band’s pivotal role in shaping the heavy metal genre, both in Birmingham and globally. The award came just days before the band’s final concert at Villa Park, a highly anticipated event expected to boost the local economy by up to £20 million. During the ceremony, Butler expressed his gratitude for Birmingham’s unwavering support throughout the band’s career, despite early criticisms. Ozzy Osbourne reflected on his humble beginnings, recalling how his father went into debt to buy him a microphone. The band also made a surprise visit to a newly unveiled Black Sabbath mural on Navigation Street. Black Sabbath, formed in Aston in 1968, has sold over 75 million albums worldwide and remains one of the most influential rock bands in history.
