Scottish Singer-Songwriter Jacob Alon Wins 2026 Brits Critics’ Choice Award

Scottish singer-songwriter Jacob Alon, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, has been announced as the winner of the 2026 Brits Critics’ Choice Award. The award, previously known as Brits Rising Star, was reverted to its original name this year to emphasize the role of critical acclaim in supporting emerging artists. Selected by a panel of industry experts, Alon triumphed over fellow nominees soul singer Sienna Spiro and dance-pop artist Rose Gray. The announcement was made on BBC Radio 1’s New Music Show, where a visibly shocked Alon described the win as ‘bonkers’ and admitted they never expected to be considered ‘Brits material.’ Alon expressed deep gratitude, noting that songwriting felt far removed from such recognition and that the honor made them feel ‘cheeky and very, very proud.’ Hailing from Fife, Scotland, Alon built their reputation in Edinburgh’s folk scene following a challenging time at Edinburgh University—where they studied theoretical physics and medicine before dropping out—and a difficult period in London. Their music, influenced by folk storytelling, centers on themes like failed romantic relationships, as explored in their debut album *In Limerence*, released last May. The album earned a Mercury Prize shortlist spot, and Alon previously made history as the first Scottish act named BBC Introducing Artist of the Year. Early recognition came from a barefoot performance of their single ‘Fairy in a Bottle’ on Jools Holland’s BBC 2 show in November 2024, after releasing just one track. Alon thanked supporters, including family—who would be proud regardless of the award’s scale—and reflected on their unexpected journey from academia to music stardom. The Brits Awards ceremony, featuring this year’s winners, is set to take place live from Manchester’s Co-op Live on February 28, 2026.
