Joni Mitchell receives lifetime achievement Juno at 2026 awards ceremony

The 2026 Juno Awards honored Joni Mitchell with a lifetime achievement award during the gala at the TD Coliseum in Hamilton. Mitchell, 82, accepted the award with the help of a cane, reflecting on how a 2015 brain aneurysm changed her life for the better and how she now lives among a home filled with women. Prime Minister Mark Carney introduced her, highlighting her Prairie roots and her influence on Canadian music. Mitchell’s previous Junos include two wins, but this ceremony marked a more exclusive recognition of her enduring impact on pop music. The night also celebrated other Canadian artists, including Rush, The Beaches, Tate McRae, and Nelly Furtado’s induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, with Drake delivering a video tribute. Mitchell’s career has been characterized by constant evolution, authenticity, and a rebellious spirit, with performances of her classics like A Case of You and Both Sides Now marking the evening. Her prior connection to the Junos dates back to 1981 when she was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame by Pierre Trudeau. She referenced her history with Rolling Stone and her feminist anthem Lead Balloon, underscoring the changing landscape for women in rock.
