Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s KID Project Supplies Free Instruments to DeKalb Students

The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Instrument Donation Project, known as the KID Project, has had a significant positive impact on music education in DeKalb County since its start in 2024. The project refurbishes and donates instruments to school music programs, addressing financial barriers that prevent students from accessing musical instruments. In its first year, 28 instruments were donated, and over the following summer, more than 30 additional instruments were repaired and distributed. To date, 84 instruments including violins, clarinets, trumpets, and more have been donated. The initiative is supported by local organizations like the Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary and the Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation, and works closely with local musicians and repair technicians to make this possible. The KID Project accepts donations of gently used band and orchestra instruments, excluding certain types like pianos and drums, and offers these instruments free of charge to students and their families. This effort aims to open doors for students passionate about music, helping them overcome financial obstacles and enjoy the benefits of music education and performance opportunities.
