Kneecap Issues Apology Over Controversial Concert Comments and Clarifies Stance

The Belfast-based rap group Kneecap has issued a public apology to the families of murdered MPs Sir David Amess and Jo Cox following backlash over controversial comments made during a concert in November 2023. Footage surfaced showing a member of the band allegedly saying, ‘The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP.’ The group responded with a statement on social media, asserting that the clip was taken out of context and insisting they reject all forms of violence. They extended heartfelt apologies to the Amess and Cox families, stating it was never their intention to cause distress.

The comments sparked widespread condemnation from politicians across the UK and Ireland, with calls for Kneecap to be removed from upcoming festivals such as TRNSMT and Glastonbury. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s office criticized the band’s reception of government funding, while Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called for prosecution. Additionally, police are assessing another video from a London concert where a member allegedly expressed support for Hamas and Hezbollah—both banned organizations in the UK. Kneecap has since denied supporting any terrorist groups and reaffirmed their condemnation of all violence against civilians.

Despite the controversy, none of the Kneecap members have been charged with any offenses.
