Kneecap Rapper Faces Court Over Alleged Terrorism Offence for Hezbollah Flag Display

Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, the rapper known as Mo Chara from the Irish-speaking rap group Kneecap, has appeared in court in London to determine whether he will stand trial for a terrorism-related offence. The charges stem from an incident in November 2024 when he allegedly displayed a flag supporting the proscribed organization Hezbollah during a performance at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town. Ó hAnnaidh, who denies the charge, claims it was a political act and not an act of support for terrorism. The case, which was originally set to be heard at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, was moved to Woolwich due to a water main issue. The court has been considering whether the charge was filed within the statutory six-month limit. Ó hAnnaidh’s defense team is challenging the case, citing a technical error in how the charge was presented. The rapper has been on unconditional bail since his initial court appearance in June. Hezbollah is recognized as a terrorist organization by the UK government, and showing support for them is illegal. Kneecap, known for their provocative lyrics and controversial merchandise, gained fame with their music and a semi-fictionalized film. The group has previously faced criticism, including a case against the UK government regarding an arts grant withdrawal.
