Artists Defend Kneecap Against Calls for Deplatforming After Controversial Statements

More than 40 prominent musicians, including Paul Weller, Primal Scream, and Annie Mac, have signed an open letter supporting Belfast rap group Kneecap, who have faced backlash following controversial public remarks. The trio drew criticism after displaying a ‘Free Palestine’ message and an expletive against Israel during their Coachella performance, followed by the surfacing of videos showing one member seemingly praising Hamas and Hezbollah, and another advocating violence against MPs. These incidents prompted Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch to call for prosecution, while Glastonbury faces pressure to remove them from its lineup. Some scheduled performances have been canceled. The open letter, issued by their label Heavenly Recordings, argues that there is a targeted effort to censor and deplatform the band, asserting that political figures should not dictate who performs at music events. It shifts focus to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, accusing UK politicians of ignoring alleged war crimes by Israel. While the Metropolitan Police are reviewing the video content, Kneecap responded via Instagram, expressing regret to the families of murdered MPs and denying any intent to incite violence. The group maintains their message promotes love, inclusion, and hope.
