Kylie Minogue achieves first UK Christmas number one with ‘XMAS’
Australian pop star Kylie Minogue has reached a major milestone by securing her first Christmas number one in the UK with her song ‘XMAS’. At 57, Minogue becomes the first solo female artist in 12 years to top the festive chart, following Sam Bailey’s ‘Skyscraper’ in 2013. This achievement also makes her the first woman to have UK number one singles across four different decades. The success follows two consecutive years where Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ held the top spot. Minogue expressed her excitement and gratitude, calling the achievement ‘the most wonderful gift’ and thanking fans for their support. The ‘XMAS’ music video features Minogue teaching a dance to children and adults and includes a special cameo from Abba’s Bjorn Ulvaeus. The current UK singles chart shows ‘Last Christmas’ in second place, Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ at third, Brenda Lee’s ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ at fourth, and charity single ‘Lullaby’ by Together For Palestine at number five. Kylie Minogue has previously topped the singles chart seven times with hits like ‘I Should Be So Lucky’, ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’, and ‘Slow’. Martin Talbot, CEO of the Official Charts Company, highlighted that Minogue could now rival Mariah Carey as the ‘queen of Christmas’. The last Australian artist to achieve a Christmas number one was Nicole Kidman in 2001.
