Albert Mazibuko, Veteran Ladysmith Black Mambazo Singer, Passes Away at 77

Albert Mazibuko, a cherished and long-serving tenor of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, passed away at the age of 77. Joining the world-renowned group in 1969, Mazibuko dedicated over five decades to performing and preserving the traditional Zulu a cappella styles of isicathamiya and mbube. Known affectionately as ‘the librarian’ among his colleagues, he was celebrated for his deep knowledge of the group’s history, music, and cultural roots. His contributions extended beyond performance; Mazibuko was regarded as a cultural custodian and elder whose wisdom helped shape the ensemble’s identity both on stage and behind the scenes. Xolani Majozi, speaking for the group, noted that Mazibuko’s passing marks the end of an era, highlighting the significant role he played in bringing South Africa’s musical heritage to global audiences. Though he departed from the group 11 months ago, his legacy continues through younger members who carry forward the traditions he so carefully nurtured. Ladysmith Black Mambazo honoured him as an intelligent, humble, and quiet yet powerful presence whose life work left an indelible mark on both colleagues and fans worldwide.
