Macklemore Addresses Removal From Ed Sheeran Tour Following Pro-Palestine Remarks

Macklemore has publicly addressed his removal from the remaining U.S. dates of Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour, following controversy over his onstage comments regarding Palestine. In an Instagram post, the rapper clarified that the decision to remove him was not made by Sheeran directly but rather by stadium owners, particularly Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium. Macklemore stated that Kraft had reportedly pressured Sheeran’s team, threatening to withhold venue access for the tour if Macklemore remained on the lineup. The rapper emphasized that he was not a victim, noting that he and Sheeran have careers, resources, and safety, while the Palestinian people face ongoing violence, with over 20,000 children reportedly killed in Gaza alone. Macklemore defended his pro-Palestine message, stating that criticism of Israel and support for Palestinian rights does not equate to anti-Semitism, and that his message was about universal human dignity and freedom. He also highlighted the importance of taking a stance against oppression, arguing that neutrality is not possible when one side has overwhelming military and financial support. The concert promoter, Messina Touring Group, confirmed the decision, citing venue restrictions as the reason for removing Macklemore from the tour. Macklemore’s remarks at MetLife Stadium on September 4, where he called for ‘Free Palestine’ and performed a song supporting pro-Palestinian protests, had sparked significant debate. His Instagram post included a full statement, which he shared on social media, reiterating his commitment to advocating for Palestinian rights and criticizing the lack of public support for the Palestinian cause. The controversy has drawn attention to the intersection of celebrity activism, political expression in entertainment, and the challenges faced by artists who take public stances on geopolitical issues.
