Waiian Shares His Journey of Authenticity and Growth in Filipino Hip-Hop

Makati-based rapper Waiian, known for his heartfelt and vulnerable lyrics, has steadily risen in the Filipino hip-hop scene. He discovered his love for lyricism in senior high school after analyzing Lupe Fiasco’s ‘Lamborghini Angels,’ realizing that rap could convey deeper emotions. His early experimentation included writing a love song for his crush, which affirmed his ability to connect with listeners emotionally. Waiian initially gained recognition as part of the collective Kartell’em, where collaboration and friendly competition shaped his artistry. However, he felt the need to express personal vulnerabilities independently, leading him to pursue a solo career. His debut solo album WEYAAT? took two years to complete due to personal struggles and creative misalignment, while his follow-up album BACKSHOTS in 2025 was completed in just three months, reflecting his more introspective and confident self. Waiian emphasizes authenticity in his music, often addressing real-life experiences rather than common rap tropes like money and guns. He continues to draw inspiration from the diverse people he meets in Makati, aiming to bridge the gap between Filipino and international rap listeners. Through his work, Waiian hopes to redefine local rap by showing that it can be both relatable and deeply personal.
