Tributes pour in for Mani, The Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist, at star-studded Manchester funeral

The funeral of Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, the iconic bassist of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, took place at Manchester Cathedral, drawing family, friends, and fans, as well as legendary figures from the Manchester music scene. The service was attended by his former bandmates Ian Brown and Bobby Gillespie, Oasis’ Liam Gallagher, and ex-Manchester United footballers Sir David Beckham and Gary Neville. Fans lined the streets of Manchester to pay their respects as the funeral cortege made its way from Mani’s home in Stockport to the city center. Ian Brown, in his emotional eulogy, described Mani as ‘a brother’ and a ‘beautiful soul,’ praising his ability to laugh through any hardship. The service was accompanied by music from The Stone Roses, including the track ‘I Wanna Be Adored.’ The coffin was adorned with the band’s iconic album artwork and a Manchester United scarf. Several other notable musicians from Manchester also paid their respects, including Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs (Oasis), Mike Joyce (The Smiths), and Peter Hook (New Order). Mani’s death was due to respiratory complications linked to emphysema. His passing occurred shortly after the death of his wife, Imelda. The tribute-filled service highlighted Mani’s central role in Manchester’s music culture and his enduring legacy.
