UK Cancels Wireless Festival Following Entry Ban for Rapper Ye Over Antisemitism

The rapper formerly known as Kanye West, now called Ye, has been barred from entering the United Kingdom due to his history of antisemitic remarks. He was scheduled to headline the Wireless Festival in London from July 10-12, a major three-day outdoor event. The UK government stated that his presence would not be ‘conducive to the public good,’ effectively blocking his electronic travel authorization. Following this decision, the festival organizers canceled the event, offering refunds to ticket holders. The announcement comes after mounting pressure from sponsors, politicians, and the public, condemning Ye’s previous statements, including a song titled ‘Heil Hitler’ and a swastika T-shirt released last year. The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, emphasized the government’s stance against antisemitism and commitment to protect the Jewish community. Ye previously apologized, attributing his behavior to a manic episode related to bipolar disorder, and expressed willingness to meet with the UK Jewish community to demonstrate genuine remorse. Several festival sponsors had already withdrawn support. Organizations like the Community Security Trust and the Board of Deputies of British Jews highlighted that public performance is not an appropriate platform for proving remorse. Festival Republic had initially defended Ye but acknowledged the serious impact of his past remarks upon announcing the cancellation.
