Birdsville Big Red Bash Cancelled Due to Outback Flooding

The Birdsville Big Red Bash, a major outback Queensland music festival, has been cancelled for 2026 following torrential rainfall and subsequent road closures. Organisers cited an inability to relocate the event due to ongoing flood conditions, as a year’s worth of rain fell in February due to a tropical low. This follows the recent collapse of the Byron Bay Bluesfest and represents the second consecutive year the festival won’s take place – the 2025 event was paused for a ‘gap year.’

Founder Greg Donovan explained that Mother Nature held the ultimate authority, and the decision, while difficult, was made in the event’s and patrons’ best interests. The festival, known for attracting roughly 10,000 attendees to the Simpson Desert and injecting about $20 million into the local economy, was set to feature acts including Missy Higgins, The Teskey Brothers, and Shannon Noll. Ticket holders are being offered refunds or the option to transfer their tickets to the 2027 festival or the 2026 Mundi Mundi Bash in Broken Hill. Oztix is working on processing refunds, and organisers are committed to bringing the Big Red Bash back in 2027. The situation highlights the significant impact extreme weather can have on regional events and the communities they support. Local businesses and suppliers are also feeling the sting of the cancellation.
