Bristol venue apologizes for canceling Oi Va Voi’s concert amid activist pressure

A Bristol music venue, Strange Brew, has admitted it made a mistake in canceling a concert by Jewish folk klezmer band Oi Va Voi. The decision was made after activist groups pressured the venue, citing concerns over the band’s Jewish identity and the inclusion of an Israeli singer. The group, which has been active since the early 2000s, condemned the backlash, which they described as a form of intimidation against minority groups. They also noted the negative impact this incident had on their reputation, finances, and mental well-being. The venue, which initially cancelled the gig in May, apologized for their actions, stating they were wrong to bow to external pressure based on misguided claims. In response, Strange Brew has implemented antisemitism training for its management and donated to the Community Security Trust, which works to protect Jews in the UK. Oi Va Voi, known for their blend of traditional Jewish klezmer music and modern influences, expressed that they had faced untrue accusations largely due to their heritage and affiliations. The band welcomed the venue’s apology but criticized the ease with which venues and festivals often cancel Jewish acts under similar pressure.
