Netflix defends legality and fairness of documentary on Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs amid disputes

Netflix has defended its new four-part documentary, *Sean Combs: The Reckoning*, produced by rapper 50 Cent, after strong criticism from Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and his representatives. Combs’ spokesperson described the production as a ‘shameful hit piece’ that used privately recorded material without authorization, including footage of conversations with his lawyer and his son days before his 2024 arrest. They also accused Netflix of allowing 50 Cent—known to have a long-running feud with Combs—to control the narrative out of personal vendetta. The spokesperson claimed that Combs had been filming since he was 19 to tell his own story, and the alleged use of this material violated his rights.

Netflix responded that all footage was obtained legally and that 50 Cent served only as an executive producer with no creative control. The documentary, released Tuesday, examines Combs’ career and legal controversies, including allegations of violent conduct and connections to the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. It features interviews with former associates and jurors from his recent trial, where he was convicted on prostitution-related charges but acquitted of more serious offenses. Combs is serving a 50-month sentence and plans to appeal. The film’s director, Alexandria Stapleton, stated that the footage was acquired lawfully and the filmmakers’ identities have been protected for safety reasons. The documentary aims to explore Combs’ influence in hip-hop and the darker allegations surrounding his career.
