The Netherlands will return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027 after deciding to abandon its planned boycott over Israel’s participation. The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS had previously indicated that the country would not take part if Israel were allowed to compete, reflecting concerns linked to the war in Gaza and the wider political controversy surrounding Israel’s presence at the contest.

The decision to return follows developments earlier in September, when Eurovision organizers introduced new measures intended to protect the contest from political interference and address concerns about the rules governing participation. Those changes appear to have influenced AVROTROS’s position, although the broadcaster has continued to express reservations about the situation.

The Netherlands was one of several countries to raise objections to Israel’s participation. The issue has generated significant debate among broadcasters, artists, fans, and campaigners, particularly because Eurovision is officially presented as a nonpolitical cultural event. Critics of Israel’s participation have argued that the country’s involvement should be reconsidered because of the humanitarian consequences of the Gaza war, while supporters of its continued participation have emphasized the contest’s rules and the separation between governments and individual performers.

By returning, the Netherlands will once again compete alongside other European and international broadcasters at the 2027 contest. The move does not necessarily signal that all concerns have been resolved, but it indicates that the Dutch broadcaster considers the updated arrangements sufficient to participate. The dispute over Israel’s involvement is likely to remain a major issue in the buildup to Eurovision 2027.
