Orpheus and Eurydice: A Haunting, Acrobatic Reimagining of Gluck’s Opera

The Edinburgh International Festival presents an imaginative reworking of Gluck’s opera *Orpheus and Eurydice* under the direction of Yaron Lifschitz. Brisbane-based Circa, known for blending acrobatics with contemporary dance, elevates the piece with striking, minimalist visuals and high-flying performances. The production opens with Eurydice’s death depicted through acrobatic tumbling, setting the tone for Orpheus’s grief-stricken journey. The stark set, featuring hospital beds and a glass house, complements the abstract narrative, where it’s never clear whether the events are happening in Orpheus’s mind or reality. Iestyn Davies gives an exceptional performance as Orpheus, his countertenor voice and physicality capturing the tortured emotions of the character. Samantha Clarke’s versatile soprano shifts between Eurydice and Amor, while the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, led by Laurence Cummings, provides a powerful musical backdrop. The final scene, with Orpheus bound in a straitjacket, remains one of the most striking moments. The production is both emotionally intense and visually daring, offering a fresh take on a classic opera.
