A Look Back at Ozzy Osbourne’s Marriage to Thelma Riley

Ozzy Osbourne was married to his first wife, Thelma Riley, from 1971 to 1982. Their relationship coincided with the rise of Black Sabbath and was heavily impacted by Ozzy’s struggles with drug and alcohol addiction. The couple met at the Birmingham nightclub Rum Runner, where Thelma worked, and quickly married in a registry office in 1971. They had two children together, Jessica and Louis, while Ozzy also adopted Thelma’s son from a previous relationship, Elliot. In his autobiography, Ozzy admitted to being a negligent husband, frequently absent due to touring, substance abuse, and unfaithfulness, and even physically abusive during difficult periods. After separating in 1982 and finalizing their divorce in 1989, Thelma chose a life away from the public eye, working as a school teacher in Leicestershire, England, and removing most traces of her life with Ozzy. Ozzy later expressed deep regret over the marriage, calling it a “big mistake” and acknowledging the suffering he caused. Despite the complex dynamics of his blended family, his current wife Sharon Osbourne has noted that she maintains a close relationship with Louis, highlighting a measure of continuity and connection despite past challenges.
