Scottish folk singer Michael McGovern from East Kilbride experienced a dramatic rise in popularity after actor Paul Mescal, known for Gladiator II and Hamnet, mentioned in a December interview that he was enjoying McGovern’s song ‘Evelyn,’ a poignant folk ballad from the album Thin White Road. Although Mescal couldn’t recall the singer’s name, the endorsement from the high-profile actor with a large social media following led to a roughly 700% increase in music listens, thousands of new followers, and broader exposure, particularly among younger audiences. McGovern expressed amusement and gratitude rather than resentment over the name forgetfulness, noting that fans drawn by the mention have stayed for the music itself. With over 15 years of performing experience, including early gigs in bars as a teenager alongside friend and drummer Callum Little, McGovern released his debut album Highfield Suite as a DIY bedroom project during the 2020 Covid lockdown. His second album, Thin White Road, was recorded with a full band at Black Bay Studio on the Isle of Lewis in a focused, distraction-free environment during a cold January. The boost has resulted in sold-out shows, including three nights at London’s Water Rats venue and an upcoming performance at the Celtic Connections festival, which holds personal significance as it inspired him in his youth through outings with his grandfather. McGovern hopes to return to the studio in 2026 and values inspiring others to create music, citing messages from young musicians as deeply meaningful.
