Olivia Newton-John and Pat Carroll’s Early Musical Partnership in 1960s London

Before Olivia Newton-John became a global pop icon and the star of Grease, she spent the mid-1960s performing as part of a pop vocal duo called ‘Pat and Olivia’ alongside her close friend and fellow Australian singer, Pat Carroll. The duo formed after both artists met in the Australian music circuit and appeared on local television shows like Swallow’s Juniors. They moved to London in 1966, sharing a flat in Hampstead with Olivia’s mother, and began performing together in nightclubs and pubs across the UK and Europe. Their repertoire included energetic pop covers and folk-blended harmonies, and they gained traction by backing major stars like Cliff Richard and securing television appearances. However, their partnership ended abruptly in 1966 due to UK immigration laws when Pat Carroll’s visa expired, forcing her to return to Australia. Pat married musician John Farrar in 1969, who later became a key collaborator on Olivia’s biggest hits. Olivia remained in Britain to pursue a solo career that eventually led to her international stardom in the 1970s. The photographs featured in the article capture this early period of Newton-John’s career, highlighting her collaboration with Pat Carroll before she became a household name.
