John Lennon’s Piano Sells for Record $3.3 Million at Beatles Memorabilia Auction

A piano once used by John Lennon to compose several iconic songs for The Beatles, including ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,’ ‘A Day In The Life,’ and ‘Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite!,’ has sold for nearly $3.3 million at Christie’s New York. The instrument, a Broadwood upright piano, was estimated to sell between $400,000 and $600,000 but exceeded expectations, setting a new record as the most expensive piece of Beatles memorabilia ever sold. The auction was part of The Jim Irsay Collection: Hall of Fame, which featured other significant items including Ringo Starr’s first Ludwig drum kit. Starr’s drum kit sold for nearly $2.4 million, temporarily breaking the record for the most expensive drum set, before a drum head from his second kit fetched $2.9 million. Additional Beatles memorabilia in the auction included photographs, handwritten letters, signed postcards from Lennon, and a legal affidavit from Paul McCartney regarding the band’s breakup. The sale highlights the enduring cultural and historical significance of The Beatles, who transformed popular music in the 1960s and remain one of the best-selling music acts of all time, with numerous chart-topping singles and albums.
