Iconic 1968 Pink Floyd Portraits Wrapped in Pink Fabric

In August 1968, the English rock band Pink Floyd participated in a striking portrait session in Los Angeles, captured by photographer Michael Ochs. The photos feature the classic four-man lineup of Nick Mason, David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright, shortly after the departure of founding member Syd Barrett in April of that year. David Gilmour, who had joined earlier in 1968, was beginning to define his role as the new lead guitarist. The band is enveloped in a large piece of pink translucent fabric, a visual pun on their name that reflects the whimsical and experimental spirit of the psychedelic rock era. While these images were not created for any album cover, they have become some of the most recognizable portraits of Pink Floyd’s post-Barrett era, highlighting their innovative approach to both music and visual presentation. The photographs capture the transitional period in the band’s history, illustrating how Pink Floyd was redefining its identity and aesthetic during a pivotal year in their career.
