PinkPantheress becomes first woman to win Brit Award for Producer of the Year

Pop star PinkPantheress has been named Producer of the Year at the Brit Awards, becoming the first woman to receive the prize since it was introduced in 1977. At 24, she is also the youngest recipient in the award’s history. Speaking to BBC News, the artist described the achievement as ‘bittersweet,’ noting that while she is honored, it is surprising that no other woman has won the award before her. Previously, Kate Bush was the only female producer to be nominated, for her 1989 album The Sensual World.

PinkPantheress first gained attention five years ago by posting lo-fi tracks such as Break It Off and Pain on TikTok, blending UK garage and drum and bass influences. Her rapid rise led to winning the BBC Sound of 2022 award, and she has since accumulated more than one billion streams worldwide. Her 2023 single Boy’s a Liar, Pt. 2 became a global hit, and her mixtape Fancy That reached the UK Top 10 and received a Mercury Prize nomination.

Entirely self-taught, she began producing music as a teenager using YouTube tutorials and basic equipment, even recording early vocals with a Nintendo Wii microphone. She continues to record much of her music at home, emphasizing that accessible technology allows aspiring artists to create from their bedrooms.

Currently touring internationally, including performances at Australia’s Laneway Festival, PinkPantheress is also nominated at this year’s Brit Awards for Best Artist and Best Dance Act. She hopes her win will encourage more young women, especially those with limited resources, to pursue music production.
